Stables stars shine at Trials
03/09/2008: After a double win at Rosehill on Saturday, the stable enjoyed continuing success yesterday with an impressive day at the trials.
Star colt, Murtajill was the star performer at the trials yesterday demolishing his rivals in the trial field.
 Melbourne Bound Murtajill |
“I think he has come back better this time” commented Tim.
Danny Nikolic rode the horse, and was pleased with his performance and the way he felt.
Murtajill won the trial by 8 lengths in 1.02.53 for the 1030m trip.
Murtjill will now head of to Melbourne next week in preparation for the Group 3 Gilgai Stakes over 1200m at Flemington on the 4th of October. After which he will most probably be freshened up for the Age Classic.
The stable also enjoyed winning the first two-year-old trial of the season with Fastnet Rock colt, Zikmann.
“Zikmann is a lovely colt and has always shown ability. I was very pleased with his trial and he will now start in the Breeders Plate on Epsom Cup day”.
Mirabeau, also had his first trial back, running an impressive trial, just knocking up in the last 100m. He will have another trial in a fortnight.

Saturday Double to start Spring season
01/09/2008: The stable enjoyed a double Saturday Metropolitan victory on Saturday, when taking out the first race of the day with Kiloton, who was having only his third start. The horse has been in the stable for around 9 weeks and has had two trials, then headed to Rosehill on Saturday.
Kiloton winning first race of day |
Group 1 winner Typhoon Zed completed the double victory in the last race of the day, the Group 3 Concorde Stakes. It was a very nail biting finish between Typhoon Zed and ex-stable horse Raheeb, who is now trained by A Cummings after being sold to Patinack Farm.
Typhoon Zed winning Gp 3 Concorde Stakes |
“It was a very satisfying win, as I had put a lot of work into Raheeb when we had him”
“It was a huge effort by Typhoon Zed and a great way to end the day”
Jockey Corey Brown, was very happy with the ride commenting “He toughed it out well. It was a good run”.
Kiloton will run again at Rosehill on the 13th and Typhoon Zed will now head down to Melbourne next week in preparation for the Group 1 Manikato over 1200m.

Murtajill draws another wide barrier - Stradbroke
06/05/2008: (Brisbane Times) Glyn Schofield, jockey of Stradbroke Handicap hopeful Murtajill, was doing his best to remain upbeat after the colt drew the second outside barrier for Saturday's Eagle Farm feature.
A final field of 20 plus four emergencies was paid up for the 1400-metre race today and Murtajill came up with gate 23 at the all-important draw.
Schofield conceded the Tim Martin-trained colt would face a tough task from the alley but said it was his job to make the most of the cards dealt.
"It's not a great draw but that's what we've got and we have to deal with it now," Schofield said.
"He's in great form, his last couple of runs have showed that he's making good improvement as he gets older.
"His recent efforts have also shown that he's up to this level."
Murtajill's wide draw continues a luckless sequence of bad barriers in big races.
While he drew gate four when a last-start second to Apache Cat in the Doomben 10,000 - the traditional Stradbroke lead-up - four of his other five attempts at Group One level have been from horror gates.
He drew 14 of 16 in last year's Golden Slipper, 18 of 18 in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes, 14 of 16 in Weekend Hussler's Caulfield Guineas and nine of nine when runner-up to Racing To Win in last month's All-Aged Stakes.
A $9 chance just days ago, TAB Sportsbet eased Murtajill to $15 following today's draw with Casino Prince ($5 in to $4.40) tightening his grip on the race after coming up with an ideal gate in four.

Hualmulan classy win on debut
05/05/2008: Huamulan, a 2yo Lonhro filly out of Lady Mulan, started her career with an impressive run at Canterbury on Wednesday winning on debut in the Winter Racefest Handicap (1250m) at Canterbury on Wednesday.
Huamulan (Lonhro x Lady Mulan) winning ondebut |
The win gave Lonhro his third individual winner and sixth win for the season in his freshman stallion year.
Huamulan was well supported in betting, backed from $3 into $2.50 before jumping straight to the front and leading all the way.
“She’s a very nice filly with a big future,” stable foreman Jason Patrick said.
“On her work Tim just thought she’d win today but the wet track was a worry.
“It’s nice to know she can get through it.”
Huamulan ridden by Jay Ford defeated King Thing by just under a length with Leave Now another one and a quarter lengths away in third.
Jockey Jay Ford commented, “She only got through the ground so so and she’s not a natural leader so it was a good effort to win today. I think there is still plenty of upside to her”.

Murtajill strong finished 2nd in Doomben 10,000
27/05/2008: Apache Cat was just too good for Murtajill on Saturday in the Group 1 Doomben 10,000, but he was by no means disgraced, with again, another solid run.
Murtajill jumped well and went forward to lead, however on the turn Apache Cat put his foot down and pulled away from the rest of the field. Murtajill fought on strongly keeping up with Apache Cat for some distance before he surged ahead.
Murtajill ended up finishing a strong second to Apache Cat and notching up another $130,000 in prizemoney, taking his current tally to just under $622,000.
Murtajill will next challenge the field in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap over 1400m on the June Long Weekend.

Teasing adds another win at Scone Cup Day
27/05/2008: The Tim Martin Stable had a successful day at Scone Cup Day on Friday with a second from Carpe Jugulum in the 1100m Maiden and a win from homebred mare Teasing in the $100,000 Casino Prince Handicap.
Teasing began slowly from her barrier 1, but raced well and was ridden a treat by jockey Corey Brown, to clear away in the last 100m to win by a length in front of Our Liam.
The Scone race day is the richest in Country Racing in NSW and Teasing’s win gathered her another $65,000 in prizemoney, taking her tally to over $169,000, not bad for a homebred mare owned by Tim Martin Bloodstock and The King’s and Borthwicks from Tim’s hometown of Walcha.

Murtajill chasing Group 1 - Doomben 10,000
22/05/2008: (Racing and Sports – Nathan Exelby) Tim Martin considers a Group 1 win can triple the value of a potential stallion and he is hoping his frustrating run of bad luck with classy colt Murtajill can end in this Saturday's Doomben 10,000.
As the record priced weanling of his year (2005 Magic Millions National Sale $660,000), Murtajill (Rock Of Gibraltar-Skating, by At Talaq) has always been a colt with a high profile and after his outstanding debut win in the Breeders' Plate, major studs have been circling for his services.
His family is also one of the hottest in Australia right now, with a three-quarter brother (by Exceed And Excel) making $1.2million at Easter last year and the last two yearlings from his half-sister Skates making $800,000 (c by Fusaichi Pegasus) and $1.7million respectively (c by Encosta De Lago) at the Inglis Easter showpiece.
But despite showing enormous potential, the Rock Of Gibraltar colt is yet to crack it for a Group 1 win, although Martin believes this is more through ill fortune than any lack of ability on Murtajill's part.
“There's no doubting that he's a Group 1 horse and he deserves to win a Group 1,” he said.
“The barrier beat him in the Slipper (when 4th to Forensics last year) and in fact he's drawn badly in every Group 1 race he's contested, except where he drew barrier one in the (AJC) Sires and the fence was off.”
Luck has finally gone the way of Martin and Murtajill's high profile owner Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa al Maktoum, with the grey colt coming up with the four gate in Saturday's 1350m feature.
Murtajill arrives in peak form, having run second to multi millionaire Racing To Win in the G1 All Aged Stakes at his most recent outing.
“I'm quietly confident about his chances – I certainly can't fault the horse at the moment,” Martin said.
Murtajill has two more chances to win a Group 1 race as a three-year-old, with next month's Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) also on his winter radar.
“Winning a Group 1 race makes a hell of a difference to what a horse is worth – it can triple their value,” Martin said.
“Breeders like to send their mare to a stallion that has won a Group 1 race.”
If Murtajill does crack it for a major in Brisbane, there is every likelihood he will be retired to stud at the conclusion of this season, but Martin would love to see him race on as an older horse.
“I think he could definitely win a big race as a four-year-old,” he said.
Martin has already proven he can guide a young horse towards a successful stallion career, with his former dual Group 1 winner Exceed And Excel set to be crowned Australia's Champion First Season Sire this year.
“I don't like comparing horses, but there's no reason Murtajill won't make into a good stallion either,” he said.
“He's got good tactical speed, a great pedigree and he's the type of horse that seems to work so well here in Australia.”
Murtajill's sire Rock Of Gibraltar is the leading sire of individual stakes winners for second season stallions this year, but the Coolmore stallion is still seeking his first Australian Group 1 victory.
His dam Skating won the 1993 Doncaster Handicap, in addition to the race that is now known as the Coolmore Classic at Group 1 level and is also the dam of Magic Millions winner Bradbury's Luck (Redoute's Choice) – now a popular stallion at Queensland's Glenlogan Park Stud.
Skating is also the dam of Skates (Danehill), who in turn is the dam of this season's G1 Robert Sangster Stakes winner Juste Momente (Giant's Causeway).

Del Lirio courageous second place at long odds
19/05/08: Little Hussonet filly Del Lirio showed her true guts and determination on Saturday at Rosehill in the Rating 81 1200m Handicap for 3yo Fillies with a courageous second place behind the favourite Royal Rock.
Del Lirio had a starting price of $27 and started from the outside barrier. She jumped well to go forward and lead and kicked on in the straight to fly home and only just get pipped at the post by Royal Rock to be beaten by a Half Head.
Del Lirio is owned by WA businessman Michael MacDermott and wife Jill, and from only 5 starts has had two city wins and a second and accumulated just under $67,000.
Stormhill had a gallant run in the Group 1 Doomben Cup in Brisbane, finishing 5th in a field of 16. He will now go on to race in the Brisbane Cup on the July Long Weekend, with the Group 2 PJ O’Shea Stakes on the 31st in between.
|
Two stakesrunners in Brisbane
14/05/2008: The Martin Racing Stables will be represented by two forces in Brisbane at Stakes level on Saturday, with Stable stalwart Stormhill running in the Group 1 Doomben Cup and 2 year old colt Jealous Guy in the Group 2 XXXX Gold Champagne Classic over 1200m.
Stormhill had a great run in the Group 2 Hollaindale Cup at the Gold Coast last start and the extra distance will suit him perfectly.
Jealous Guy had a great win last start at Canterbury and will be very competitive in his race, his third start, and first at stakes level.
Murtajill also joined the team up in Brisbane at the start of the week, with his next start being the Group One Doomben 10,000 next weekend, and then heading toward the Group One Stradbroke on the July Long Weekend.
|
Jealous Guy wins at Canterbury
08/05/2008: Jealous Guy demonstrated the talent that he did in his two trials, which he won both considerable well, at Canterbury yesterday in a two-year-old 1100m handicap.
Jealous Guy (Blue, green braces, white armbands) |
This was Jealous Guy’s second start. His first start was at Canterbury on April 23rd on a wet track, which hindered his performance considerably, finishing in 6th position.
He jumped well from barrier 3 and sat nicely in 3rd-4th position most of the way around. He made his dash for a the finish a furlong out, holding on from Punters Corner to finish a close first (head).
Jealous Guy will now head to Brisbane to compete in the QLD Winter Carnival, having been nominated for the Group One TJ Smith, on the Queens Birthday long weekend.

Weekend wrapup - Murtajill & Stormhill
06/05/2008: The wrap-up from the weekend included a gallant second placing from Murtajill in the Group One All Aged Stakes behind Racing To Win and a third placing by Stormhill at the Gold Coast in the Group 2 Hollindale Stakes.
Murtajill impressed spectators with a very impressive run into second place from the outside barrier at Randwick on Saturday in the Group One All Aged Stakes. It was the three-year-old Colt’s third start this campaign and he has so far not been out of the placings in three starts. Including, 3rd in the Strada Stakes, a very close 2nd in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes and 2nd again behind champion Racing To Win.
Murtajill (yellow with Blue V and Blue cap) |
Glyn Schofield took the ride on Murtajill and rode the horse a treat. Glyn commented after the race “He turned in a great run today. When Racing To Win went past him he really dug deep and tried his heart out”.
Murtajill heads up to Brisbane tonight, with the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 and the Group 1 Stradbroke in his sights.
Stormhill is already up in Brisbane representing the stable and ran an impressive race in the Group 2 Hollindale over 1800m on Saturday at the Gold Coast.
Stormhill will run in the Group One Doomben Cup next Saturday over 2020m, with the extra distance suiting him.

Murtajill and Stormhill representing at Group level Saturday
02/05/2008: (Sydney Morning Herald) ROSEHILL trainer Tim Martin is out to turn giant-killer this weekend with star attractions Racing To Win and Casino Prince on the radar in Saturday's group 1 All-Aged Stakes at Randwick.
Martin will start valuable colt Murtajill in the All-Aged, after scratching the three-year-old from the South Pacific Classic at the track midweek, and warned on Thursday not to underestimate his charge despite an enforced jockey change.
 Murtajill |
"The owner [Sheik Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum] wanted to scratch from Wednesday's race. Group 1 races are what he is after," Martin revealed.
"I hope the decision proves lucrative. I thought it was an absolute gift race for us on Wednesday. It would have just been a matter of going around, but he is not out of his depth in the All-Aged."
South African Glyn Schofield takes over the Murtajill mount from Hugh Bowman, who was aboard in a last-start second to Serious Speed in the Hobartville Stakes.
Bowman sticks with Racing To Win in the All-Aged despite copping a spray from its trainer John O'Shea after steering Reigning To Win into second behind Apache Cat in last week's T J Smith Stakes.
"Racing To Win has the form on the board with a second to Weekend Hussler in the George Ryder last time out," Bowman said, adding he was not dwelling on the Reigning To Win defeat or a careless riding suspension incurred at Randwick on AJC Australian Oaks day that will put him out of action from May 8 to May 23. "I'm confident that Racing To Win can return to winning form in the All-Aged but in saying that, Casino Prince is racing as good as ever and Murtajill is certainly no slouch."
Casino Prince is coming off a third in the Ryder and an unlucky second to Triple Honour in the Doncaster, but trainer Anthony Cummings is expecting a bold run.
"It is always a task running three weeks in a row but he is there, doing well, he shapes up like he'll do the same again," he said. "Racing To Win is plainly the hardest to beat. We followed him in the George Ryder but in that race we were always going to give him a start."
Martin said punters should not be surprised to see Murtajill lead as Schofield's options are limited from the outside gate. "He has drawn terribly but is a go-forward horse in a race that looks to lack any real speed," he said. "He did race up on the speed in the Golden Slipper last year and they ran along in that. He is much fitter for his two runs back from a spell, too.
"Obviously, horses like Racing To Win and Casino Prince are seasoned stars, but while Murtajill didn't win in his spring preparation he performed well against older horses in the Rupert Clarke. We'll have to be at the top of our game to beat the two good horses but it certainly wouldn't be a shock to me if we did."
The stable also has Danehill Stallion Stormhill representing up in Queensland in the Group 2 Hollaindale Stakes over 1800m.
Stormhill winning the Gp 3 Shannon Stakes |
Stormhill's last run was a gallant effort in the Group 1 George Ryder against Weekend Hussler and Racing To Win. He travalled up to Brisbane at the end of last week and has been wokring well.

Any Humour in Listed Wagga Cup
01/05/2008: (Wagga) He was bought for a song as a yearling, he was big and gangly and no one wanted him until he won his first race but now, after only eight starts, Any Humour is on his way to developing into a top class stayer and is second favourite for tomorrow’s Listed $120,000 Sheps Earthmoving Repairs Wagga Gold Cup (2000m) .
After tomorrow Any Humour's trainer Tim Martin plans to take the horse to Brisbane with the Brisbane Cup his ultimate mission and the trainer believes the best is yet ahead for the son of Danewin.
Any Humour winning at Rosehill |
Martin had no success syndicating Any Humour until he won his maiden at Wyong as a late three-year-old.
Martin was then able to convince a friend, Michael Cook, to buy the horse and it has already turned out to be a profitable decision.
Any Humour has since won two city races, one each at Rosehill and Canterbury.
He disappointed at his last start when 11th behind Nuclear Sky in the Neville Sellwood Stakes (2000m) on a heavy track at Rosehill after starting second favourite.
However Corey Brown told stewards the horse has not handled the conditions.
Tomorrow he will find a track much more to his liking with a dead four rating at this stage and fine weather.
Brown, who has ridden Any Humour at his last two starts, has a big opinion of the horse and has retained the cup ride.
Martin always believed that Any Humour had the ability and breeding to develop into a good stayer.
“He was big and gangly and nothing to look at,” Martin said.
“I tried to sell the horse to clients after I bought him but no one was interested so I decided to keep him myself and press on.
“This is an above average horse.
“He took a long time to grow into himself, as staying bred horses often do, but he has matured now and is going to win some good races.”

Live Life second start for second win, at Randwick |

Congratulations to his winning connections on Hong Kong, Mr MC Tam.

Any Humour easily steps up to the 1900m |

Two purchases on 1st full day of Magic Millions
26/03/2008: Tim Martin Bloodstock made two purchases yesterday for the stable; both colts and both lovely acquisitions for the stable.
The first purchase of the day was lot 156, an outstanding chestnut Encosta De Lago colt from the draft of Gerry Harvey''s Baramul Stud.
Encosta x Platonic colt |
A lovely racey and athletic colt, he has good bone, good natural strength and muscling and is a lovely mover. He is out of the mare Platonic, who is a half sister to Shovhog, Shovoff and Mustabshir and has produced a stakes winner in Carnegie House. She is a producer of winners, having had six foals, five to race - all winners.
He was purchased for $250,000
Not a Single Doubt x Star Plume |
The second purchase was a Not A Single Doubt colt from the Swettenham Stud draft from the mare Star Plume.
He is a 3/4 brother to handy filly Marie Madeleine, who was placed in the Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude.
A real early 2yo type, he is a shourt coupled, strong well developed horse and will be sent straight to the breakers and set for the early 2yo races in the spring.
He was purchsed for $160,000.
Please do not hesitate to contact Edwina or Tim for more information on these horses and we will keep the site updated of more purchases as they happen.

Group 1 glory with Typhoon Zed in Galaxy
Typhoon Zed and jockey Tim Clark achieved Group I success on Easter Saturday when they captured the $350,000 Inglis Galaxy (1100m) at Royal Randwick.
The pair first joined together when a solid sixth behind superstar sprinter Weekend Hussler a month ago in the Oakleigh Plate and Martin stuck with the combination going into Saturday's feature event. The decision definitely paid off.
Clark hunted the Zeditave gelding across from a wide draw after jumping then settled comfortably behind Gamble Me and Keen Commander.
Coming into the straight Typhoon Zed came around the heels of the leading duo and from the 200m he forged away with Keen Commander to fight out the finish.
A moderate early tempo helped that pair hold off any late challenges and in a bobbing finish it was Typhoon Zed who stuck his head out at the right time.
The official margin was a half head with a further head to Fritz’s Princess in third place. Race favourite and one of the very few horses able to get close to Weekend Hussler, Magnus, finished a half length away in fourth.
“Winning a Group I is something I have always dreamed of … it’s awesome,” Clark said.
The overall time was 1.04.12 with the last 600m run in 35.87. Despite having solid form around some of Australia’s best sprinters in recent months, Typhoon Zed was sent out at the generous odds of $12.30 with NSWTAB.
Typhoon Zed (purple and pink)wins Galaxy |
“The horse has earned it. He has been very unlucky in Melbourne in a couple of runs. I brought him back and he hasn’t put a foot wrong. I stuck with Timmy (Clark), he did a good job in Melbourne and I couldn’t be happier,” Martin said.
“We thought we would roll forward, hopefully Freedman’s horse (Gamble Me) and Keen Commander would cut each other up but they didn’t really do that, they weren’t going that quick.
“He is a horse who races best with his runs spaced so I’ll just give him another month between runs and find a race for him over the carnival.”
We send congratulations out to all the connections of Typhoon Zed. He has now accumulated more than $462,500 in prizemoney. The Ralph Johns Syndicate managed to score a double on Saturday with maiden Gelding Force and Effect winning at Newcastle as well.

Any Humour - 4 .5 length victory
17/03/2008: Any Humour ran his rivals into the ground in the Bacardi Breezer, Rating 86 Handicap over 1400m at Rosehill on Saturday.
Any Humour well clear of rivals |
Sent straight to the front, Any Humour was able to bowl along on his own terms before clearing ahead of the rest on the field on straightening and running away for an easy victory.
Any Humour led throughout under the guidance of Martin's stable apprentice Matthew Palmer, and won by 4¼ lengths from the resuming Bryannbo's Gift.
"That was like shooting fish in a barrel," Martin said.
"Matty learned from his last ride on the horse. He went too slow on him at Randwick. This is clearly the way to ride the horse”
Any Humour started at $5 and at no stage looked like being beaten.
"I should have let him roll along like I did today," Palmer said.
"I learned from it, though, and hopefully I will keep learning."

Barbarino continues journey to Derby
05/03/08: Promising Zabeel gelding Barbarino got closer to the AJC Derby yesterday with a gallant victory against older horses in the www.theraces.com.au Handicap over 1900m at Canterbury yesterday.
This followed on from his debut start and victory on the 13th of February at Randwick.
Martin commented that “He’ll take a lot more out of this race today” and that “He’s a real mile and half horse that just grinds them into the ground”.
Hugh Bowman, who rode the gelding said “He’s a horse with a big future. They made him work but it didn’t hurt him and he’ll keep improving”
Barbarino will now have another run in another Rating race over 1800m at the Kensington track on Easter Monday before the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas over 2000m on April 12 and then the AJC Derby over 2400m on April 26.

Aggie Grey wins again at Canterbury
29/02/08: Aggie Grey continued her winning ways on just her second start at Canterbury last night, leading all the way to win the De Bortoli Windy Peak Handicap over 1200m.
 Aggie Grey victorious again |
Aggie Grey was sent straight to the front by jockey Matthew Palmer, commanding the race and then kicking away on the straight, beating all other runners to the line.
The win for Matthew Palmer meant that his claim now goes down to 1.5kg after 50 city wins.
Aggie Grey will now be given a freshen up and set for the Eskimo Prince, a stakes race at Randwick at the end of the month.
|
Barbarino impressive win first up
14/02/08: The stable had another first-runner winner on Wednesday at Randwick with promising stable debutant Barbarino making a stunning debut in the Kingsford Handicap over 1550m on the Kensington track.
"I’ve always held a good opinion of him and the further he goes the better he’ll get,” Martin said.
“Being optimistic if he holds up the [AJC Australian] Derby is where he is heading.
“John Hawkes did it last year with Fiumicino in his first preparation so it can be done.”
Barbarino winning by lengths |
After being slow to leave the gates, Barbarino whipped around the field to take up the running before clearing out in the straight to win easily.
“It was probably a blessing he drew the outside because when he missed the start there was room for him to move,” he said.
Matthew Palmer, the jockey on board commented, “A very good effort – when he needed to find a gear in the straight he found two – a nice horse in the making,”
Barbarino is a son of Zabeel and out of the former top Lee Freedman-trained race mare Ugachuka, who was a dual Group II winner taking the Edward Manifold Stakes over 1620m at Flemington, and the Queen Of The Turf Stakes over 1500m at Rosehill, and cost Martin $NZ 140,000 at the New Zealand Bloodstock Premier sale in 2006.
He is owned by Paul Silvestro; also the owner of New Zealand Derby winner and AJC Derby runner Redoute’s Dancer, Terry Board and Tim Martin Bloodstock.
Barbarino 57kg ($2.80) (M.Palmer a2) defeated Mantova 56kg ($6.50) (P.Robl) by four lengths with Gypsy Ruler 54.5kg ($12) (T.Clark) another two lengths back in third.

Quartet of winners for the Stable
07/01/2008: The Tim Martin Stable was in full flight at Canterbury yesterday with four winners from five runners at the meeting.
Dalayel, 2yo filly winning |
The first winner of the day was Dalayel, a two-year-old filly by Stravinsky purchased at the Inglis Easter yearling sales last year and owned by Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum. This was her second start and the race experience has done her a lot of good, with her being more focused on the job at task and letting her ability come to the forefront. Hugh Bowman, who rode the filly, was more than happy with her performance.
Second to run was the The Boxer, who had a lovely win in his trial a couple of weeks back. The Boxer, a front runner, was taken on by a Joe Pride trained horse that ended up running right back in the field, but still managed to finish a gallant third after using up much of the energy reserves early in the race.
Thumb Prints |
Thumb Prints was the next started and winner, a first starter gelding by Danehill Dancer. He led all the way to a 2 ¾ Length victory.
Dubai’s Choice, starting back from a long break and with new enthusiastic owners, was the next winner, after having to survive a drawn out protest from Larry Cassidy on board runner-up Goldlago. Dubai’s Choice was purchased by Tim Martin Bloodstock at the December Inglis sale and sold onto James Cortis and several other friends. “He had a few problems as a baby but Tim was confident he had them ironed out and I take my hat off to him”, stated an ecstatic James Cortis after his win.
Dubai''s Choice |
Aggie Grey, another first starter for the stable finished the quartet for the stable in style, with a 3 ½ length win, showing brilliant speed and leading all the way. She is owned by Arthur and Harry Mitchell of Yarraman Park, Matt Macarthur-Onslow and Tim Brown.

Impressive day trialling
23/01/2008: The Tim Martin Racing stable had an impressive day at the trials yesterday, including debuts by four of the stables juveniles.
Scouting Wide, a three year old Zabeel gelding won the first heat of the day by 2 ½ lengths, with another 3yo Zabeel filly coming in third. In the second open 1030m heat, the stable had more impressive runs from yet another Zabeel 3yo colt in Barbarino in second place and stable performer The Boxer returning to racing in style with an easy win.
The third heat consisted of the four debuting two-year-olds. Jealous Guy, a Rock of Gibraltar colt, scored an easy win followed by Exceed and Excel colt Andretti and Tale of the Cat filly Feline Frenzy.
Other triallers of note were Aggie Grey, whose winning trial was the second fastest time of the day over the 900m. Also winning their trial was Monkeys, and Behind came a close second in her trial.
With 17 triallers all up, it was exciting to have so many horses back in action and we are truly looking forward to the coming months of racing.

Smart win by Friday Nights
17/01/2008: The stable had a smart maiden winner at Wyong on Wednesday when the three year-old Friday Nights scored at his second start in the 1350 metre maiden.
Raced by Eddie Hayson and the Tim Martin Bloodstock Syndicate, Friday Nights showed good improvement from his debut fourth on December 29 and looks a horse to follow.
He is a half-brother by Anabaa (USA) to the stakes-winners Johnny Reb and Power of Pegasus being from the solid producer Kylemore, a daughter of Golden Slipper winner Star Watch. Johnny Reb and Power of Pegasus were both trained by Tim. Johnny Reb for his father in-law, Michael O’Gorman and others.
To Spur With Love was the other runner on the day, coming in third after a hard run. To Spur With Love is the horse raced by the Girls Racing Club Syndicate and has had much success for the girls, never been out of the prizemoney.

Two-year-olds off and running
09/01/2008: With the invasion of EI severely affecting the 2yo racing season so far, it is exciting to have the stables first two-year-olds off and running finally.
With trials run at Rosehill on Tuesday, the Tim Martin Stable had its first juveniles starting.
Stalingrad, a Redoute’s Choice colt out of Kingmambo mare Sakhalin, was the first youngster to run, running a lovely trial and coming in second. A smart horse, he will definitely be one to watch in the future. Stalingrad was purchased at the Inglis Easter sale from the Yarraman Park draft and is owned by a syndicate including Yarraman Park, M Ramsden, A Ramsden, J Sullivan, Etak Thoroughbreds and P Jones.
Miss Purdy, a Tale of The Cat filly out of Remnant, who was purchased at the Magic Millions sale in January also trialled coming in 3rd behind another Tim Martin runner, Dalayel (Stravinsky x Fire Lass), that was purchased at Inglis Easter.
Miss Purdy is owned by M Macdermott from Perth and Dalayel is owned by Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa. Both fillies have shown speed and talent and we look forward to some racing from them this summer.

Double for stable at Canterbury Night Racing
04/01/2008: The stable managed to score a double on two accounts on Thursday night at Canterbury, with a winning double and a double for Arrowfield Stallion Hussonet, with wins from both debut runner Werd and filly Del Lirio
It was a long awaited debut of three year-old Hussonet (USA) colt Werd, and a happy ending with the desired result when he scooted home to win at the first Canterbury night meeting of the season on Thursday.
Werd (Hussonet x Messenger Miss) |
Having barrier trialled on no less than eight separate occasions prior to going to the race officially, Werd did not lack for experience and proved his mettle in tipping out the favourite Cat Burglar to win the 1250 metre maiden by half a length.
Werd is part of a syndicate including himself, Sheikh Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum and Arrowfield Stud.
Smart filly Del Lirio made it two wins from three starts when she broke quickly for Jim Cassidy and led throughout to score a tenacious victory in the 1250 metre Ratings 75 event for filles and mares, prevailing by a half head over Montana Hilton in a thrilling finish.
“I told Jimmy to ride her positive as I thought leading would be an advantage and that’s the way it worked out,” said Martin.
“She’s won two from three and can certainly go on from here.”
Del Lirio (Hussonet x Miss Anna Louise) |
Like Werd, Del Lirio came from the Arrowfield Stud draft at the 2006 Magic Millions Yearling Sale where she was knocked down to Pedigree Dynamics for $90,000.
Del Lirio is raced by a loyal client of the stable, Michael MacDermott from Perth.

Trialers for the stable. Racing not far away
05/12/2007: Just under a month since horses were allowed to re-enter into the stables, we have had out first trialers and finally feel like we are truly back on track.
On Tuesday, the Tim Martin Stables had nine horses trialing after having the horse gallop a week or so earlier and deciding that they would go nicely into the following weeks trial, giving most of them nice soft trials.
The stable has plans for a few runners next weekend here at Rosehill on the 15th and then at Wyong on Wednesday 19th.
All of the staff were very happy to have their horses back up running again and are very much looking forward to once again taking them to the races after almost 4 months of no racing.
|
First lot of horses to come back into Stable
09/11/07: Tim Martin Racing Stable is looking forward to training again and returning to racing with the end of EI in sight.
The stable has completed the decontamination of the stables and will be bringing horses back into the yard as of this weekend.
Racing is due to start back on December 1st at Randwick and here at Rosehill the next week and the week after. At this stage we will be taking a bit longer to get out horses up and running, due to time constraints and not wanting to push the horses after being sick and/or having extended time off.
We all look forward to seeing you at the races soon.

Typhoon Zed consistent
06/11/07: Typhoon Zed, the only runner left to represent the Tim Martin Racing Stable, ran a gallant 3rd in the Group 2 Salinger Stakes on Saturday at Flemington, ridden by Blake Shinn behind Swick.
Typhoon Zed (purple and pink) trying on for 3rd in Gp 2 Salinger |
Typhoon Zed has proven himself as an extremely consistent performer, with his four starts producing no lesser placing than 3rd place in no lesser than Open company.
Typhoon Zed started off his Spring campaign with a 2nd in the Listed Cove Classic, followed by an excruciatingly close 3rd in an Open handicap at The Valley. He then went on to another close 2nd behind Tesbury Jack in the Group 2 International Sprint and then 2nd again in the Salinger on the weekend.
He has now taken his prizemoney up to $242,410 and from ten starts has counted 4 wins, 2 seconds and 2 thirds.

Two Group runners Derby Day at Flemington
29/10/07: The Tim Martin Stable is hoping on a drop in distance and the reinstatement of blinkers will prove a winning move with colt Murtajill in Saturday''s group 1 Ascot Vale Stakes at Flemington.
Murtajill had an outstanding run against older horses when a very close fourth behind the placegetters in the Group 1 Rupert Clarke Stakes at Caulfield on September 22.
"Corey Brown will ride Murtajill in the Ascot Vale, and I''m expecting a good showing from the horse this weekend," Martin said yesterday. "I''ve freshened him up since the Caulfield Guineas over the mile [1600 metres], and the drop to the 1200m in the Ascot Vale is just what he is looking for. On what he has done at his last two starts, he cannot stay the mile."
Typhoon Zed winning at Flemington on Cup Day last year |
Caulfield Guineas winner Weekend Hussler will line up against Murtajill in the Ascot Vale, with Brad Rawiller to ride, but Martin isn''t afraid of taking him on again.
"Weekend Hussler is a very good horse, but the Ascot Vale compared to the Caulfield Guineas is a completely different race," the trainer warned.
The other runner for the Martin stable on the weekend is consistent sprinter Typhoon Zed in the Group 2 Salinger Stakes.

Road to EI recovery
24/10/2007: A date has now been set for horses to come back into the stables. As of November 12th, horses will be allowed to enter onto Rosehill from outside spelling farms and pre-trainers. This will happen after a decontamination process to rid the premises of EI infection.
This is a real step forward as we now have an idea of the future and where we are headed as far as training and racing.
Dates have also been set for racing in NSW/Sydney, with the first meeting back being held at Randwick on December 1 and the following 2 weekends here at Rosehill. The 22nd will see racing back at Randwick as will Boxing Day. Racing NSW believe that the racing calendar should be back to normal as of January 2008.
A date for the Golden Slipper has not been finalized as yet, however it has been moved back 5-6 weeks.
We would like to thank all our clients for their understanding and support during this tough time and we are really looking forward to having the horses back in work and racing again and look forward to some winning times and seeing everyone at the races again.

Typhoon Zed close placing again!
22/10/07: With only two horses remaining in work under Tim Martin, Typhoon Zed and Murtajill down in Melbourne, hope was hanging on Typhoon Zed’s run in the Group 2 International Sprint at Caulfield on Saturday.
Typhoon Zed has been working very well and chances were looking high. He came away with a close second to Tesbury Jack, who had come 2nd in his start before in the Group 1 Goodwood.
Typhoon Zed was a $62,500 purchase from the Inglis Classic sale and has now won almost $211,000 in prizemoney from only 9 starts. So far this preparation down in Melbourne he has not been out of the prizemoney with another two very close placings.
Typhoon Zed will now be aimed toward one more race before the carnival finishes.

EI Update
10/09/2007: Currently all measures are being taken to ensure our home track, Rosehill, is not contaminated by infected horses or through human contact.
"We are taking the strictest of precautions here at Rosehill," Martin said. "It would be unwise to have anyone involved with the Centennial Park horses to be entering Rosehill, or Warwick Farm and Randwick for that matter, so as to minimise the risk of the spread of infection.
Precautions that are being adhered to included security on gates to ensure that anyone entering with their cars have not been anywhere near other horses or infected areas, a list of people authorised to enter the stable area, washing of hands and feet before entering and wrist bands have to worn all day.
We ask any owners that would like to come and visit their horses during this time, that they ring ahead so we can arrange a time and have their names put on a list for visitation. We also would like to reiterate that you have not been in contact with any other horses prior to coming.
All horses that are capable of being in work are still being trained as usual in the hope that we will have some trials or races to race in soon.

Impressive run by Typhoon Zed
03/09/2007: Lightly raced sprinter Typhoon Zed turned in a ripper of a run at Caulfield on Saturday, September 1, when finishing a close second to dual Group One winner Undue in the Listed MRC Martha Cove Classic over 1100 metres, ridden by capable apprentice Sebastian Murphy.
Typhoon Zed |
A $62,500 purchase from the draft of Widden Stud at the 2005 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, the gelding has now won four of seven starts earning $170,050 for his lucky connections.
Typhoon was beaten one length, by Dual Group One winning Gelding Undue, who was also the favourite.
Bred by Gooree Stud and offered for sale on their behalf by Widden, Typhoon Zed is by Zeditave from imported Royal Diploma (USA), a daughter of the proven Danzig sire Honor Grades from the extended family of freakish champion Secretariat.

Tim Martin Team in Melbourne
30/08/2007: The Tim Martin Racing Stable has been very lucky and blessed having moved three of the stables stars down to Melbourne for the carnival weeks before the outbreak of the Equine Flu halted all movements.
 Hopeful Spring Champion, Murtajill |
Murtajill, last years Golden Slipper Favourite; Langborghini, a seasoned campaigner and Listed winner and Typhoon Zed, the lightly raced talented sprinter who won the Schweppes Tonic 1000 on Melbourne Cup Day last year are the three Tim Martin Racing Team representatives for this Spring.
All three are racing this weekend at Caulfield, including Murtajill in the Group 3 McNeil, Typhoon Zed in the Listed Cove Classic and Langborghini in an Open class, having meant to raced the previous weekend, when racing was cancelled.
Fingers crossed we can get some winners from our Melbourne crew after having all racing put on standstill here in NSW.

Tim Martin Stable raceday sponsor
01/08/2007: Missle Stakes Day at Rosehill is the first weekend race meeting of the new season.
Bravehearts, a foundation set up to support children and families in the fight against child sexual assult in the community, are having a fundraising day on the day, with the Tim Martin Racing Stables being a major sponsor for the day, with the sponsorship of a race.
The stable has sprinter Becks in at Rosehill this weekend, on a raceday that the Tim Martin Racing Stables are sponsoring.
"My stable will sponsor a race on Missile Stakes Day and, as a result of that, if Becks wins or earns any prizemoney, then 10 per cent of that will be donated to the Braveheart Foundation" Martin said.
"I''m trying to get other trainers to donate the same percentage if they manage to win a race at Rosehill on Saturday as well. The more money we can make for Braveheart the better."
|
Murtajill ready for Spring
01/08/2007: The Spring Racing Carnival is almost underway, with big name horses coming out for trials yesterday at Rosehill. Murtajill was nominated to trial, however the stable opted for a gallop on the course proper instead before heading down to Melbourne tonight in preparation for his first race on August 18. He will be aimed at four group 1 races against older horses and then return to racing against his age group.
Murtajill winning the Gp 3 Skyline |
"I couldn''t be happier with the horse and I want to get him to Melbourne early, as I''ve got races like the Manikato Stakes and Rupert Clarke in mind for him against the older horses at group 1 level before tackling the Caulfield Guineas and the Ascot Vale Stakes against his own age," Martin said.
Damien Oliver has been booked to ride Murtajill in its return at Caulfield, as regular rider Jim Cassidy is out injured following a race fall at Eagle Farm in June.
Also trialing yesterday was Group-placed horse Oh Oklahoma, with a pleasing trial and a first place in front of the likes of Desert War.

Teasing makes it a Martin Double at Canterbury
05/07/07: Teasing was again victorious in the Class 3 Fillies and Mares 1400m Handicap at Canterbury yesterday, romping home to win by 1 length to give the Martin Stables a double at the mid week city metropolitan meeting.
This makes it a double for Teasing after her win on the same track on June 22 in a Class 3 over the same distance. Apprentice Simon Miller rode Teasing to victory beating home Full On Amy in a time of 1.06.22.
Teasing has now amassed over $70,500 in just 9 career starts including 4 wins.

Chiarezza wins first start in style
05/07/07: Chiarezza, a first started took the honours in the Cleanevent Handicap over 1250m at Canterbury yesterday.
After beginning quickly, Chiarezza, was halted back and had to travel out three wide in a midfield position for most of the race. However, the filly showed her talent and was able to convincingly outrun the other horses in the race and finish in first place, by a long neck to Star of Crown in second place.
Chiarezza in her first start victory at Canterbury |
”There looked to be a bit of speed in the race so I told him [Zac Purton] to go back but I should have told him to use his initiative and when she began like a gazelle to go forward,” Martin said.
”I was worried from then on in the run but she’s a nice filly and we’ve got a very high opinion of her.”
Martin will see how the filly comes through the run and most likely give her another start at Rosehill on July 21 before giving her a short break.
”After Rosehill we’ll look towards the spring,” he said.
”She’s got a great pedigree and should get over a bit of ground.”
Chiarezza is owned by Anthony and Sonia Rogers of Airlie Stud in Co. Kildare, Ireland.

La Samba first starter first winner
30/05/07: The Tim Martin trained first starter La Samba smashed the class record in winning the Paul Micallef Two Year Old Maiden (1350m) at Wyong yesterday.
La Samba, ridden by Zac Purton, grabbed the lead right on the line to beat Ausbred Icon by a nose in 1min 21.45secs.
That easily bettered the previous best of 1min 23.03 set by Park Life in 2003.
La Samba is owned by Japanese client Mr Ichimura and she is his first horse with the stable. She is a well bred filly by Orientate, being a half sister to Lucky Unicorn and a yearling by Redoute’s that was sold for $1.6 million at the recent Inglis Easter sale

Teasing wins first up at Wyong
10/05/07: Teasing had a slashing win in fast time on a heavy track in the NBN Cannonball Class Three (1000m) at Wyong today.
“She will go to Randwick now and there is a stakes race in Brisbane I might send her up for,” trainer Tim Martin said.
‘I was not surprised by the win going on her track work but I was worried about the heavy track.
Teasing, ridden by Nathan Cumberland, exploded away at the top of the straight to win by five lengths in an amazing 58.5 seconds, running home the last 600 metres in 35.13 seconds.
“She is a mare with a touch of class about her but she is a short course specialist,” Martin said.
Teasing attracted headlines at her first race start when punters sent her out favourite in a class one at Grafton last year.
However Hugh Bowman eased out of the race midway because he thought she had broken down.
Nothing wrong could be found with her but Martin thinks the hard track that day may have caused her to jar up.
She was spelled and resumed to win a class one at Wyong last October and after two more starts was sent to the paddock again.
She is by More Than Ready from Turned On, a mare that Martin won a Walcha maiden with while training in Tamworth.

Brasco victorious at Randwick
28/05/2007: Brasco, a three-year-old gelding, was victorious in the Class 3 1100m Handicap at Randwick on Saturday, beating home Canary Islands.
Brasco was coming off a 10th placing behind superstar filly Gold Edition in the Listed Gold Coast Guineas on May 5th.
Brasco beating home Canary Islands at Randwick on Saturday |
Brett Poulus rode Brasco, claiming the 2.5kg and rode the horse a treat. Brasco is a horse with great gate speed. Poulus got out early, used the horses early speed and got across sitting near the front of the field just as instructed by Tim.
Poulus commented that Brasco relaxed well behind the speed and traveled sweetly to the turn. “He got off the fence at the right time and found plenty”, Poulus said.
Interfere, who was formally trained by the stable and won on debut, and now with Joh O’Shea started favourite and finshed back in the field in 8th position.
|
Del Lirio too strong on debut
24/05/2007: Del Lirio had plenty of support on debut and she didn’t let her followers down with a decisive win in the Aust Bridal Show 26-27 May Handicap over 1200m at Canterbury yesterday.
Del Lirio started second favourite behind another debutant, Miombo from the John Hawkes stable who was the $3 favourite.
Del Lirio winning on debut at Canterbury |
After beginning quickly from her inside draw, Del Lirio, was content to sit off the leader, Smokin’ Jewel’s hindquarters but wouldn’t allow the filly to cross onto the rails.
Approaching the home turn, jockey Jim Cassidy allowed Del Lirio to slide along the rails and straightened up on terms with Smokin’ Jewel before scooting clear.
Del Lirio, even though she is slight filly, with there not being a lot of her, has shown she has got quite a bit of ability from her two trials and race debut.
Tim was happy with the run and commented, ”I’ll just take her home, see how she pulls up, then find another race for her.”
Del Lirio 57.5kg ($4.20) (J.Cassidy) defeated Vera’s Pride 57.5kg ($7.50) (T.O’Hara a3) by three quarters of a length with Miombo 57.5kg ($3) (D.Beadman) a further one and a half lengths back in third. The 1200m was run in 1.11.68 with the final 600m covered in 36.03.

Stormhill had one successful trial at Canterbury on April 20 and travelled up to Brisbane last week.

Raheeb close second again in Brisbane
14/05/2007: Raheeb, the stunning chestnut colt and full brother to Piccadilly Circus, has had the awful unluckiness of having to come up against superstar in the making Reigning To Win in both his starts in Brisbane.
Raheeb (yellow with Blue V) in a close 2nd in the Gp 3 Classic |
Raheeb started in the Listed Queensland Day Cup on April 28th at Eagle Farm, and had to battle a wide run the entire way around, leading down the straight and was then pipped at the post by Reigning To Win. And again on the 12th of May he came against him in the Group 3 Doomben Classic, with the gelding only narrowly defeating Raheeb by a short neck.
At this stage Raheeb will now head toward the Guineas on June Long Weekend in Brisbane.

The 3yo Zedative gelding owned by Hayson Bloodstock trounced his rivals in a 4.5 length win after a slow start. Backstabber will now be aimed toward the Scone Cup Day in a fortnights time.
Gromm, a 4 year old gelding by Singspiel, was the other winner for the Martin Stable on the Friday of the Carnival. Gromm is owned by Tim Martin Bloodstock, along with Johnny Lwei, Kostya Tszyu and manager Matt Watt. Jason Lee was also on board Gromm, who took home 1st place for the Class 2 1400m.

Murtajill gains admirers with a gallant fourth in hard run Slipper
02/07/2007: A disappointing result in the Golden Slipper with a fourth place for Murtajill has not put any scepticism into his ability, with his run gaining more admirers than he had before.
With a barrier draw meaning that he had to start with a burst to get across the large field to get into a good spot, Murtajill did not settle and come back under his jockey Jimmy Cassidy.
Murtajill will now line up in the Group 1 Sire's Produce |
Murtajill led out with Husson Lightning, running sectionals that were exceptionally quick. Murtajill still managed to hold most of the field off and even ‘kicked on’ near the line to hold don for fourth place. Husson Lightning, who he traveled with most of the race finished back in eleventh place.
Murtajill will now run in the Group 1 Sire’s Produce this Saturday, AJC Derby Day, at Randwick.
The Martin Stables will also have 3 other runners on the day, with Regreagan and Raheeb starting in the Listed Carbine Club Stakes and Redoute’s Dancer, the Group 1 New Zealand Derby winner running in the Group 1 AJC Derby.

Big weekend ahead for Martin Stable
29/03/07: A big weekend ahead for the Martin Racing Stables, with the running of the Golden Slipper at Rosehill.
Murtajill, the regally bred, striking grey colt, who has been one of the favourites for the world’s biggest race for two-year-olds since his gallant win in the Breeders Plate back in September last year, is primed and ready.
Murtajill has been the solid favourite for the race up until the barrier draw on Tuesday, when the colt drew barrier 16 from 18. He then eased back into favouritism later that day.
 Golden Slipper Fvaourite Murtajill |
The stables also have another exceptionally bred colt running on the day as well, in Raheeb, a three-year-old colt, full brother to Fastnet Rock’s dam, Piccadilly Circus. He will be running in the Group 2 Tulloch Stakes, after a gallant second place in the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes two weeks prior.
Both horses are owned by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum, who unfortunately cannot make the meeting due to Dubai World Cup being on the same day.

Raheeb (outside) with a very close second in the Gp 2 Phar Lap Stakes |
Raheeb, with only 4 starts under his belt and running against mush more experienced horses ran an impressive and courageous race and was only just beat home.
Raheeb is owned by Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum, also owner of Slipper favourite Murtajill.
Raheeb will now be aimed toward the Tulloch Stakes on Golden Slipper Day.

Tim preparing for Easter Sale Time
15/03/2007: With Magic Millions, New Zealand Premier, Classic and Premier out of the way, there is now just the Inglis Easter Yearling sale left, the most prestigious of them all. This year the catalogue is better than ever, which is exciting for all involved in selecting and purchasing the yearlings.
Wednesday Night session at Easter Sales |
In the coming weeks leading up to the sales here in Sydney, Tim will be travelling up to the Hunter and around other areas having my first look at what is on offer at the Inglis Easter sale.
This year in particular, due to the excellent standard of the sale, He will be looking to search out some potential buyers together to invest in a Top Class colt, with Stallion potential. Tim has superior skills when it comes to training colts, with evidence in the likes of Exceed and Excel, Gonski, Stormhill, Oh Oklahoma and up-and-coming youngster Murtajill and NZ Derby Winner Redoute’s Dancer.
As well as the intention to purchase a fine Stallion prospect from the sales, He will also be purchasing his next crop of champions for his Rosehill Stable; both colts and fillies with a price range to suit all potential owners.
Tim with Sheikh Mohammed and Tim Stakemire |
Please do not hesitate to contact Tim or Edwina if you have any interest in any of the horses that Tim has already purchased (can be viewed on the ‘Horses Available’ section) or would like to put an order or interest in for anything come the Easter sales.

12/03/07: All pressure is off getting into the final field for the Group 1 Golden Slipper on March 31st, with Murtajill snaring the Group 3 Skyline Stakes on Saturday at Royal Randwick.
Murtajill blitzed the field in what was a very stylish win, second up for the colt after a third in the Silver Slipper two weeks previous and a win in his first start in the Listed Breeders Plate back in October.
Murtajill streaking ahead to win by 3 lengths in the Gp 3 Skyline |
Murtajill rocketed to the top of Golden Slipper betting after trouncing his rivals by three lengths with Jim Cassidy in the saddle. "I told Jimmy to be aggressive on him and make him work right to the line," Martin said.
Murtajill beat home the David Hayes trained Husson Lightening and Hawkes trained Pistols.

Redoute's Dancer wins Group 1 NZ Derby
05/03/07: Redoute''s Dancer assured his place as a prized stallion of the future with his outstanding win in today''s $700,000 Group One Mercedes Derby (2400m) at Ellerslie. He was the first Australian trained horse to ever win the prestigious New Zealand Derby.
Redoute''s Dancer and Vinny winning the Gp 1 Derby |
Redoute''s Dancer proved a popular winner with most punters as he was sent out a warm favourite. Ridden by Vinny Colgan, Redoute''s Dancer ran as a 3-1 elect on the strength of an easy win at his only other start in New Zealand, the Championship Stakes (Group 2) at 2100m, 14 days earlier.
Colgan always had the favourite well placed and his final drive saw him run down Montjeu colt Mettre En Jeu, the third favourite at 6-1, to win by a half-length.
Redoute’s Choice was purchased for $230,000 at the 2005 Magic Millions Yearling Sale on the Gold Coast. He is the first horse owned by Paul Silvestro.
Paul commented on Tim in his acceptance speech saying, "He''s a genius, Tim Martin, as astute a trainer as you can get in Australia". "And Vinny, I hardly know you, but what an unbelievable ride."
Redoute''s Dancer and owners after winning the Derby |
Redoute''s Dancer''s record currently sits at four wins and two minor placings from just 7 starts. His prizemoney has now accumulated to $543,750. He flies home at the end of the week and will now look toward starting in the Rosehill Guineas on March 25 and then head toward the AJC Derby at Randwick on Easter Saturday, April 7.

Redoute's Dancer into favouritism for NZ Derby
19/02/07: Redoute''s Dancer made a winning start to his New Zealand campaign at Ellerslie on Saturday and automatically earned favouritism for the G1 $700,000 Mercedes (New Zealand) Derby at Ellerslie on March 3.
Redoute''s Dancer winning the G2 Championship Stakes at Ellerslie |
Redoute''s Dancer won the G2 $100,000 Championship Stakes (2100m) with plenty of authority after arriving in Auckland only last Monday. Redoute''s Dancer and jockey Vinny Colgan produced a blistering sprint down the middle of the track to snatch a half-length victory.
Redoute’s Dancer was having only his sixth start on Saturday with his comfortable win. He is now a $3.50 favourite for the Derby, with the previous favourite, Magic Cape, easing to $5 after finishing fourth.
Jockey Vinny Colgan has already won the New Zealand Derby three times and declared Redoute''s Dance a top chance to provide him with a fourth victory.
Redoute''s Dancer beat home the Lance O''Sullivan and Andrew Scott-trained pair of Benedict and Stolen Derby who are also Derby aspirants.
Congratulations to owner Paul Silvestro from WA, and we look forward to the Derby on March 3.

Redoute's Dancer in form to contest NZ Derby
Redoute''s Dancer is looking all set for his trip to New Zealand for the Group One New Zealand Derby with a grinding win at Randwick.
Redoute’s Dancer is booked in to fly over to New Zealand on Monday night and run again in a Group 2 Championship Stakes on Saturday week, the 17th of February at Ellerslie
Redoute''s Dancer holding on to beat Sir James into 1st place |
Jim Cassidy had to work overtime to get Redoute''s Dancer home by a long head from Sir James in Wednesday''s Mosman Hcp (1800m) but the manner in which he stuck to his task pleased Martin.
"He is a real mile-and-a-half (2400m) horse," Martin said.
"He is a grinder and a tough customer.
"I targeted the New Zealand Derby because I didn''t know if he was up to the good staying three-year-olds here.
"He is not a fast stayer, he just keeps on at the one pace and I think a big track like Ellerslie will suit him.
"I''ve never run a horse in New Zealand before and I''m looking forward to it."
Local jockey Vinny Colgan will ride Redoute''s Dancer in the 2000m race at Ellerslie with Cassidy unsure of his commitments for Derby day which falls on the same day as the Chipping Norton Stakes in Sydney.
"It was a fight and this horse will run two miles (3200m)," Cassidy said.

Martin double at Wyong
05/02/07 – The Tim Martin stables had a double at Wyong on Thursday with two runners bolting home to both win by over 4 lengths.
Superbly bred Royal Academy (USA) colt Raheeb created a big impression in scoring a debut maiden win over 1100 metres at Wyong on Thursday, opening up to win by more than four lengths.
Backed into hot favouritism on the strength of two recent barrier trials, Raheeb is now unbeaten in three public appearances.
Prepared by Tim Martin for Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum, Raheeb is one of the cheaper purchases made by the Sheikh’s Australian based bloodstock adviser Tim Stakemire, who secured him for just $90,000 from the draft of Vinery Stud at the 2005 Magic Millions National Yearling Sale.
Raheeb is the seventh foal of stakes-winning Marauding (NZ) mare Gatana, the dam of stakes-placed Heart Strings and Donnadane, plus Group Three winner Piccadilly Circus (dam of Fastnet Rock), to whom Raheeb is a full brother.
Any Humour was the other winner, a three-year-old gelding by Danewin, also having his first start. Any Humour bolted in to lead all the way and cross the line over 4 lengths ahead of all other contenders in the race. Any Humour is raced by Tim Martin Bloodstock.

Ridden a treat by Jim Cassidy from barrier two, Typhoon Zed packed too much power for runner up Slow Waltz, zipping home with a final 600 metre split of 33.51 seconds to win by a long head.
“That was a great effort under 58 kg today,” said Martin.
“We’ll keep him fresh and work towards the three year old sprints over the carnival.”
Typhoon Zed was purchased by Martin from the draft of Widden Stud at the 2005 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale for $62,500 and has so far returned $150,050 in prizemoney to his lucky connections.

Two clear winners on Boxing Day
28/12/06: Boxing Day proved a victorious day for the Martin Stable with two runners for two winners at Randwick and Newcastle.
Typhoon Zed confirmed his ability that was seen at his last start at Melbourne on Melbourne Cup Day, destroying the rest of the field of older horses in the last race of the day, The Class 6 Canadian Club Handicap over 1000m.

Typhoon Zed jumped well, with Jockey on board, Jimmy Cassidy, getting him into a good position all the way around sitting in third and fourth position. With about a furlong to go, Typhoon Zed then streaked away to clear from the others into first place and win by 2 lengths, ahead of Palace General and Rubinda in third place.
Secret Relations was another winner for the stable a little earlier in the day at Newcastle in the Class 1 900m race, The Dakoda and Riley Spero Handicap. ‘Mouse’, as she is affectionately known in the stable, with Patrick Murphy on board, galloped home to beat home second place-getter, Hog The Limelight by two-and-a-half lengths.

Early Christmas present with 2 winners at Goulburn
28/12/06: A trip to Goulburn on Friday December 22nd proved to be well worth the two-hour truck trip with the stable bringing home and early Christmas present of two first place trophies from the day.
Recent new owners to the stable Alex and Deidre Illes, along with fellow owners of the horse got an early Christmas present with their horse All About Bill, a new resident of the stable after being with another trainer, winning his first race and clearing himself of a title of a maiden.
After a slow get-away from the gates, Jimmy Cassidy steered him home to whisk away and win by just over 2 lengths ahead of Hamma Leica Dane.
First-started Lady Astor, owned by Etak Thoroughbred and Tim’s wife, Mel, also scored a win for her owners and the Martin Stable. Lady Astor, also with Jimmy on board, was far too hot for her fellow competitors, streaking away to beat home second-placer, Covet’s Word by over 4 lengths.

Typhoon Zed winner on Melbourne Cup Day
08/11/06: TYPHOON Zed produced a fine late sprint to run away with the Schweppes Tonic 1000 on Melbourne Cup Day at Flemington after having to endure a post-race stewards inquiry after Zanzidym was squeezed badly in the closing stages of the race.
Typhoon Zed winning the Schweppes Tonic 1000 on Cup Day at Flemington |
Corey Brown was aboard Typhoon Zed, who was first up after a three-month spell. Corey settled him in mid-division before making a strong late run to run past the post ahead of Heresay, who later lost second place on protest, Liger and Centotaph.

Murtajill victorious in Breeders Plate
Murtajill stopped the clock at 57sec, nearly half a second quicker than the previous record set by eventual Group I winner Snitzel two years ago, when winning the Breeders Plate on Saturday at Royal Randwick.
The Breeders Plate is the first two-year-old race of the season and is of Listed status. The competition for Murtajill was tough; including the David Hayes trained Husson Lightening, which started favourite.
Murtajill (Rock of Gibraltar x Skating) |
Jimmy Cassidy rode the regally bred colt (Rock of Gibraltar x Skating), and was thoroughly impressed with his speed and class. Cassidy declared that he was all class and “one of the nicest two-year-olds I’ve ridden for a long, long time”.
Cassidy was trapped three wide for the 1000m Breeders'' Plate at Randwick on Murtajill but the colt had too much class to beat Husson Lightning by 1 1/2 lengths, with nearly three lengths to Maxisun third.
Murtajill crossing the line to win the Breeders Plate |
"I wasn''t worried about drawing barrier 13. I told (trainer) Tim Martin all week that the wide gate was a good thing because, being a two-year-old, it didn''t mean he would be in the barriers too long," Cassidy said.
Congratulations to His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum, who owns 90% of the colt along with Tim Martin Bloodstock.

Interfere wins in style first-up
08/05/06 Tim Martin unleashed a smart two-year-old filly on his home track with Interfere smartly winning at her first race-day appearance in the $60,000, Rotary Health Research Handicap (1100m) on Saturday May 6 at Rosehill Gardens.
Interfere showing her style at Rosehill |
Jockey Jim Cassidy took control of events from the barrier taking over the lead from Toliva (NZ) who broke well from barrier nine. Cassidy came from five and quickly took over the running.
They were leading and looking comfortable around the bend for the run down the straight, and so it proved when Cassidy asked for more at the 300m and Interfere showed a smart turn of foot to increase the lead to 2L.
Cassidy rode the Royal Academy filly easily the rest of the trip, watching over his left shoulder for any challenges, of which there none. The filly tired slightly as they went to the line, but she was a comfortable 1 1/4L ahead of Throne Hill and Danleigh who were separated by a nose.
The time was 1.04.90, the final 600m in 34.56 on the good (3) rated track. Interfere paid $2.60 as favourite.
“She’s promising and shows class” Cassidy told excited connections.
“She impressed me with everything she did, and she dig deep when I asked her her it. She can only improve”.
Interfere was a $350,000 yearling out of the draft of Kitchwin Hills, as agent, at the 2005 Easter Yearling Sales. The filly is the full brother of Phoenix Park.

REGREAGAN !! Racing's Newest Icon...
05/02/06 The Tim Martin trained Regreagan produced a stunning effort to win on debut in the 2YO Sprint (1100m) at Randwick yesterday, with the "real" Reg Reagan on hand to welcome back his charge after his successful debut.
Regreagan is the latest horse to catch the racing industry''s attention and will no doubt build his reputation as a popular "people''s" horse as his racing career goes on.
Regreagan is owned by prominent stable owner Eddie Hayson along with Tim Martin''s wife Melanie, and a couple of Rugby League''s most popular brothers, Andrew and Matty Johns.... and Reg Reagan himself (of course!)
Reg Reagan & REAGREAGAN | Reg didn''t miss his namesake''s successful debut and captured the racing crowd''s attention.
”What about that,” the pipe smoking Reg said in his KB dinner jacket.
Reg Reagan, the television alter ego of the colt''s part-owner, former Australian rugby league star Matthew Johns, was on hand for the win, donning a jacket covered with pictures of KB beer over his "Bring Back The Biff" T-shirt for the occasion.
“I’ve had a dollar each-way, the dim sims are on me tonight. He’s like his namesake and his greatest days will be when he goes to stud".
Reg Reagan & Tim Martin | "Geez I was nervous, I haven’t felt like that since playing for Gunnedah in the 1979 grand final and by the way I got man of the match.”
The Sydney Turf Club rushed to the Reg Reagan party and announced that anyone who arrives to the races and is dressed to resemble the popular "Footy Show" icon Reg Reagan himself, when the 2yo steps out next (February 25 - Rosehill Gardens), will receive FREE ENTRY into the Rosehill course to follow their new hero in the 2yo Silver Slipper.

DUBAI''S CHOICE (Z.Purton) Does It At Both Ends To Win | $1.8million Easter Yearling Sales purchase Dubai''s Choice took one small step towards recouping his price tag for owners Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum, Tim Martin Bloodstock & Arrowfield Pastoral Syndicate, when winning The Mortgage Professionals 2YO Open Handicap (1100m) at Rosehill on January 28 in the most courageous of style.
Dubai’s Choice put in an outstanding performance on debut. He was given no peace for the entire race and even though he looked like he may have been in trouble with 200m to go he fought doggedly to get the money, whilst fellow on-pace runners dropped off one by one.
Dubai’s Choice 55kg ($1.95 SP) (Z.Purton) defeated Strat’s Flyer 56kg ($6.50SP) (G.Boss) by a half neck with Absolutelyfabulous 55.5kg ($13 SP) (D.Beadman) three quarters of a length away in third.
The time for the race was a very quick 1.03.51 (last 600m in 34.82).
